Robot vacuums are becoming ever more popular in homes, due to their efficiency and convenience. With the ability to navigate your home on its own and effectively clean floors without labor-intensive work, you can enjoy more free time in your day. However, one aspect that is often overlooked is where to place your robot vacuum. Not only will it make your house look tidy, but also ensure its performance. Placing it in an improper spot can lead to incomplete cleaning and even damage to the robot vacuum. So where should I place my robot vacuum?

Where Should I Place My Robot Vacuum

If you don’t mind showing your robot vacuum, you can place it in a corner of your house with its back against a wall, make sure that corner is uncluttered and it has enough room for your robot vacuum to maneuver. However, that is not the only spot. There are a few notes when considering where you should place your robot vacuum.

Tips for choosing a location for your robot vacuum

Steady environment

The first tip in choosing an ideal location for your robot vacuum is to look for a steady environment. Your robot vacuum needs a consistent, stable surface to navigate around your home.

As once your robot has mapped your floor, it doesn’t record that map on the device itself. The floor plan is saved in Cloud. When the robot starts a new cleaning session, it moves out from the base and takes a 2d scan of the room, and tries to match what it sees with one that’s saved.

If the surroundings change, it will take a longer time for your robot vacuum to recognize its spot and start moving in an orderly pattern.

Open and uncluttered area

Clutter, such as toys, shoes, or any other objects scattered around the floor, can interfere with the robot vacuum’s movement during cleaning. When navigating, the robot vacuum uses sensors to detect its surroundings and various objects’ locations.

If there are too many obstacles in the way, your robot vacuum might find it hard to get back to the dock.

In general, below are some common conditions when finding a place for your robot vacuum.

  • At least >1.5 ft (0.5 m>) on each side of the dock.
  • At least >4 ft (1.2 m>) in front of the dock, with no furniture such as tables or chairs within this area.
  • At least >4 ft (1.2 m>) between the dock and any stairs.

Level surface and flat against a wall

The dock should be placed on a flat, level surface and against a wall. If the floor is uneven or sloped, the robot vacuum could have difficulty moving around your home.

Avoid windows

It is not recommended to place your robot vacuum near windows or any other uneven surfaces that have a lot of light reflection. These reflections can confuse the robot’s sensors and will disrupt its navigation abilities.

Avoid near stairs

Avoid placing the dock near stairs or any other places with a high risk of falling, as your robot vacuum could fall and get damaged.

Enough space around the dock

Make sure that there is enough space around the dock. This will allow your robot vacuum to move freely and easily with no obstructions.

Central location for big houses

For bigger homes, it is ideal to place the dock in a central location so that your robot vacuum can quickly access every room. This will make sure that the robot vacuum has enough time to clean all areas of your house before returning to its dock.

Wifi signal

Wherever you place your robot vacuum, make sure that the dock has a good wifi signal. A weak signal can cause delays in communication between your robot vacuum and its docking station and may affect the overall performance of your robot vacuum.

Near an electrical outlet

The dock should be placed near an electrical outlet to ensure that your robot vacuum is always charged.

Furniture placement and obstacles

It is also important to consider furniture placement and obstacles when choosing a location for your robot vacuum. Make sure the area is clear of any obstructions, such as chairs or tables, that might block the robot’s sensors.

How to hide your robot vacuum?

You can hide your robot vacuum by placing it in the center of a room, behind furniture, or in an inconspicuous corner. Make sure that there is at least 1.5 feet (0.5 m) on each side of the dock and 4 ft (1.2m) between it and any stairs or furniture to ensure smooth movement.

Can robot vacuums go under beds?

Yes, some robot vacuums are able to go under beds, as long as the beds are high enough for robot vacuums. However, it is important to make sure that the robot vacuum has enough space on each side and in front of the dock before placing it.

Choosing the right place for your robot vacuum is important to ensure that it works efficiently. Make sure that the dock is placed on a flat, level surface and there is enough space around it. It should also be away from windows, stairs, and other areas with high risk of falling. Additionally, make sure that the dock has a strong wifi signal and is close to an electrical outlet. Finally, ensure that there are no obstructions such as furniture or stairs that might block the robot’s sensors. With these tips in mind, you will be able to find the perfect spot for your robot vacuum!
