Since I owned a robot vacuum, I rarely grabbed a broom. I still do, maybe once a year to deep clean the floor. Because there are some spots that require my attention: wall edges and corners.

You see, after nearly a whole year of not mopping or cleaning, my wall edges and corners are not as spotless as I would like them to be.

Wall edges have black dots along

So when it was time for an upgrade to my robot vacuum, I wanted something that can compensate for the shortfalls of the previous one, something that can clean corners well.

I spent hours researching to know why some robot vacuums can clean corners better than others and narrowed it down to a few great robot vacuums to choose from.

How Do Robot Vacuums Clean Corners?

A regular round robot vacuum clean corners by using a side brush that can reach beyond the robot vacuum’s perimeter. This side brush will spin and direct dirt to the main brush.

If you look at the bottom of a robot vacuum, you can find 1 or 2 side brushes. These side brushes are meant to clean wall edges and corners.

I drew 2 red lines to assemble a corner. You can see the side brushes won’t be able to reach all the way to the end of the corner. Even if the manufacturer can make the brush much longer to reach the end, it won’t be as effective.

Why?

The longer the brush gets, the weaker it becomes. So instead of collecting the dirt to the dustbin, it will just spin around and make the dirt fly all over the places.

A D-shaped robot vacuum is made with this in mind. The D-shape makes it easier for the robot vacuum to get closer to the corners. Therefore, with a side brush, the job done at corners and wall edges is much better.

A D-shape robot vacuum

Personally, I think both round shape with a side brush and D shape robot vacuums clean corners well. As I don’t aim for 100%, I am happy with 80% spotless. Grabbing a mop once a year doesn’t sound so bad to me.

However, if you are not like me, if you are a perfectionist and want to see a 100% everywhere, you might consider getting a robot vacuum from below list that can really get to that last speck of dust.

Best Robot Vacuums For Corners

A D-shaped robot with a side brush will clean corners and wall edges the best. As it can get closer to the corners and have the brush to reach the end of corners.

2 best robot vacuum brands for corners are Roomba S9 and Neato D10. They are both D-shaped with side brushes that can clean corners well. However, the Roomba S9 also has many advanced features like self-cleaning, compatible with both Alexa and Google Assistant (Neato D10 is compatible with Alexa), personalized cleaning suggestions, etc.

If you don’t own one of these 2 robot vacuums, there are still something you can do to help your current robot vacuum to clean corners better. Read “How To Make Your Robot Vacuum Clean Corners Well“.

Roomba S9

This Roomba S9 is the first Roomba model that is D-shaped and enhanced with a side brush to really get to that speck of dust at your corners. It features a vSLAM Navigation system that allows it to go around the furniture and obstacles without bumping and scratching your furniture or getting stuck. It has a self-emptying feature that allow you to only take the dirt disposal bag out once every 60 days.

While the Roomba S9 is quite expensive, it provides a state-of-the-art cleaning effectiveness and is one of the best robot vacuums out there.

Roomba S9 pros

  • Superb cleaning performance
  • Self-emptying dust bin that can hold up 60 days of dust
  • Extreme precise object detection and navigation
  • Strong suction

Roomba S9 cons

  • Average run time: 120 minutes
  • The navigation in the dark is not as great.
  • Expensive

Neato D10

This Neato D10 is the best robot vacuum model as of today in Neato. It has a True HEPA filter capturing up to 99.97 percent of allergens and fine dust particles as small as 0.3 microns. It features the Neato LaserSmart technology with LIDAR navigation to help it navigate your house better. However, it still gets stuck if your house is cluttered and doesn’t have the self-emptying feature.

With less advanced technology, the Neato D10 is much cheaper than the Roomba S9 (price is around 30% of Roomba S9).

Neato D10 pros

  • LiDAR mapping, can work in the dark
  • Long run time: possible to run 300 minutes per session
  • Good for big area
  • HEPA filter is great in keeping the dust particles
  • Affordable

Neato D10 cons

  • Can get stuck
  • No hardware button for spot clean
  • No magnet strip detectors – so it’s not possible to create no-go zones in the first run
  • No quick map feature

Conclusion

In my opinion, the best robot vacuum for corners is Roomba S9. Although it comes with a high price tag, it provides a state-of-the-art cleaning performance. Not only can it clean corners and wall edges well, it also has many advanced features that can make your life easier.
